Culture and Heritage
Totem Pole, Alderville, Ontario

A visit to Northumberland is like a magical step back in time. The area is steeped in a rich and fascinating history, and the people who live here take pride in celebrating their unique heritage.

The scene is set by the towns and villages of Northumberland, where you'll see a treasure trove of well-preserved homes and public buildings, many built by United Empire Loyalists during the early years of the 19th century, when a stage coach route linked communities along the north shore of Lake Ontario.  Over 20 Ontario plaques dot our countryside commemorating these important people and places.

Or, explore Northumberland's special cultural attractions and events, from Alderville First Nation to the scenic Waterfront Trail. Annual home and garden tours, such as the Port Hope House Tour, give you further opportunities to immerse yourself in Northumberland's cultural and historic richness.

Heritage & Culture Ideas

  • One of Northumberland's crown jewels is Victoria Hall in Cobourg. It was built over 150 years ago, when the town had hopes of becoming the provincial capital. Restored to its former glory, this architectural masterpiece with Grecian columns and imposing clock tower stands majestically in the centre of town. It houses the Art Gallery of Northumberland, the Concert Hall (once a grand ballroom), and a courtroom modeled after the Old Bailey.

  • Explore pre-European culture at Alderville First Nation.  Learn about traditional First Nation culture, crafts and sacred practices. Newly-expanded Smoke's Fine Art Gallery will give you a good taste of native jewellery, oil paintings, jams and preserves.

  • Most communities also host weekend farmers' markets where you can buy fresh, delicious, locally-produced food. Here's a copy of the Farm Gate Guide to get you started.

  • Tracing what used to be the Old Stage Coach route between Port Hope and Brighton, the Apple Route is named after the variety of apple orchards that grace the countryside in the eastern portions of the county. This scenic and relaxing drive along County Road 2 takes you through many small towns and hamlets of historic significance.
