Port Hope
Port Hope combines the charm and friendliness of an historic community with the vibrancy and activity of a modern small town.
Nationally acclaimed for having the best-preserved main street in Ontario, this delightful town is well known for its wealth of lovingly restored 19th century homes, some of which have been transformed into exquisite bed and breakfast accommodations.
The town is a real draw for antique hunters, since there are nearly 15 shops here, offering everything from fine English or Canadiana furnishings to vintage china, jewellery, and traditional garden accents.
While you're here, be sure to check out the Capitol Theatre, Canada's last remaining atmospheric theatre and now part of the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre. There's always something to enjoy at the Capitol, whether it's a film, concert or live theatrical performance!
Just a little north of Port Hope proper is the lovely hamlet of Canton in which the homestead of the first director of the Royal Ontario Museum, Charles T. Currelly, lived. Ask Northumberland Tourism for your free copy of the Driving Tours booklet which will take you by his former home.

Port Hope's annual events include Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny, an exciting crazy craft race that takes place along the Ganaraska River every April, to commemorate a devastating flood that crippled the downtown in 1980. The race draws up to 15,000 spectators every year!
