Cheese Curds, Cows and Beer Tour
Tuesday is the day to take this tour into the outskirts of Campbellford in order to take advantage of the livestock sale.
From Hwy 401 head north on County Rd 30 into Campbellford. Turn right at the main bridge (Bridge St East) and proceed through town to the top of the hill and turn right on County Rd 8 heading out of town. Approximately 8 km along you'll see Empire Cheese on your right hand side. Pick up a pack of squeeky cheese curds or the ever-so-popular old, sharp Supreme Cheddar and keep heading down the road a few clicks to visit Hoard's Station livestock sale barn (Tuesdays starting at noon) where you can munch on your curds and check out the stalls set up with local produce, clothing, candy and yard sale items. Inside the barn, be entertained as the auctioneers sell off cattle, pigs and sheep. Once again, back to the eating thing, you just have to partake in a luncheon prepared by the local service groups upstairs in the barn at an old Woolworths-like counter. Make sure you save room for a slice of homemade pie.
Backtrack along County Rd 8 to Petherick's Road and head north to County Rd 38. Make a left and you'll see a small church on your right hand side. Welcome to Church-Key Brewing which is a Methodist church turned brewery! Take a free sampling of John Graham's original brew "Northumberland Ale" or the peat-smoked scotch ale "Holy Smoke".
West on County Rd 38 takes you along the Trent-Severn Waterway where there are a couple of places to enjoy the beauty of the Trent River. Eventually you'll make your way back into Campbellford to Bridge Street where you can backtrack over the bridge and out of town.
This is only a small sampling of what you can do as a bigger event each October during the Trent Hills Flavour Break which takes in 16 yummy destinations in the Campbellford, Hastings and Warkworth area.
