Cycling
Get active on our 21 trails. With its gorgeous countryside and fresh air, undulating hills and winding network of roads and trails, Northumberland is a paradise for cyclists.
Among the many routes you can explore is the Hastings to Campbellford portion of the Trans Canada Trail (not signed). The trail takes you along an abandoned railway line and is perfect for those who prefer a nice, flat ride. As you approach Campbellford, the trail takes you off of the line to a steep incline and a couple of picturesque back roads.
Once in Campbellford, the Trans Canada Trail resumes east of the Trent River at Burnbrae Road into Hoards Station. Call 1-866-401 EAST (3278) for a topographical map of the line.
You can also enjoy an exhilarating hour-long trek downhill through the trails of the Northumberland Forest, south along a few attractive back roads, then into the hamlet of Baltimore for a picnic at the Ball's Mill Conservation Area. A free topographical map is available for that trek also.
Another valuable cycling tool is our $5 back roads map. Make your cheque payable to Northumberland County and send it to Brenda McDonald, Northumberland County, 555 Courthouse Road, Street, Cobourg, ON K9A 5J6 and she'd love to send it along. Let us know what experiences you'd like to see along the way and we'll customize a trip for you.
Our free driving tours booklet is ideal for ambitious cyclists who want to tackle our more challenging hills. The booklet outlines circle driving tours which will take you past heritage sites, factory outlets and more.
Also free, our trail brochure offers various levels of cycling experiences from level biking along a fire road in the Northumberland Forest to mountain biking in the Goodrich Loomis Conservation area north of Brighton.
The Ganaraska Freewheelers is a recreational cycling club that promotes safe cycling in Northumberland. They offer weekly rides and special events in which you can join. The Cobourg Cycling Club also has weekly rides and Sunday group rides. Brian Hedney's Cycling Site offers some lovely routes within Northumberland.
Do you need to be outfitted? Basic bicycles are available for free at the Cobourg marina so you can cycle through the town to view the heritage architecture. If you're feeling ambitious, continue west on the Waterfront Trail and discover historic Port Hope. Canyon Mountain Company at 905 377-8026 will rent high-quality bikes and accessories for your on and off-road adventures in the Cobourg area.
